December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month and with the holiday shopping season in full swing it is important for everyone who will be buying gifts for children to consider safety first. Thousands of children each year suffer serious eye injuries and even blindness from toys.  Many of these injuries are caused by air rifles and BB guns.  This holiday season your young child may request a BB gun or even an “official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle.”  However it is up to gift buying adults to decide if the child you are buying it for will be safe and responsible - and not shoot their eye out.   As with all toys, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and avoid buying gifts for children not intended for their age group. Many children and especially teens will also be asking for electronics and gaming items.  For your child’s safety be sure to review the content of games or videos before purchasing them.  Many games have strong language, adult themes and an abundance of violence.  Research has confirmed that playing violent video games can increase a person's aggressive thoughts, feelings and behavior in their daily life.  Your child will likely spend hours immersed in the games or videos you give them so be sure you know what you are buying. This holiday season speak with other parents, read reviews online and talk with knowledgeable sales clerks about the items you are considering for the young people in your life.  You will learn a lot about what is out there and get the information you need to ensure that the gifts you give will be fun and safe.
